MUSCLE SORENESS
What is muscle soreness?
Patients often report to our office with complaints of muscle pain or
muscle soreness. We commonly hear, “My back hurts but I think it’s just
muscle.” Muscles can become sore after a muscle strain meaning an
exertion that goes beyond what the muscle can withstand. An example is
lifting something too heavy or from the wrong body position. Muscles can
also get sore from and increased amount of work that produces lactic
acid and leaves the muscle with “workout soreness”. We’ve all felt this
after going to the gym or exercising, and it’s normal.
The time to be concerned with muscle soreness is when it persists longer
than ten days. Minor muscle strains usually heal in seven to ten days.
Muscles that remain sore longer are usually a result of a different
cause. When muscles around the spine (neck and back) are chronically
sore it’s usually from a spinal misalignment or structural problem we
refer to as a subluxation. When a vertebra becomes subluxated, the
muscles and ligaments around the joint are constantly stretched and
become sore. The nerve in the area may also become pinched which may
also increase the quality or intensity of the pain. Often times patients
take pain killers or muscle relaxants but these typically work
temporarily or not at all because all of the cells and tissues in the
body are controlled (including the muscles) by the brain. If the brain
senses the problem (subluxation) still exists, it will signal the muscle
to stay in spasm to prevent further injury.
In our Los Alamitos office we first determine if yours is a chiropractic
problem and if so, whether it a muscle, joint, disc or nerve problem.
Once we have assessed your condition and considered our findings, we
will explain it and recommend the appropriate course of care. Treatment
may include specific chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue mobilization,
massage and recommendations on home care exercises.
